I am in the groups but am particular about the way I engage and who I engage with (have blocked many people, and also the one's using AI), and try to avoid fake engagement and those who force it. I don't like being in the groups, and some aren't as bad as others and there is less "exchange for exchange" element to it. I am trying to increase my authentic audience on Medium but it can be difficult also, so I've been using a mixture of both. I had a particularly upsetting experience recently where I blocked someone on facebook who I felt pressured to engage with, and didn't want to risk the chance of an argument online, so I blocked this person. I was upset to read a story he wrote about this, not naming me, but shaming the person who blocked him (me) for not reading his story, alleging it was because it was about religion! I didn't know what the story was about, as I didn't read it. This kind of forced engagement and shaming of people who don't read someone's stories in not acceptable and I reported it to Medium.
