I think the algorithm is also at fault, as although earnings are primarily for reads, engagement such as comments help too. I see lots of people, not begging for reads and comments, but putting in their story to please stay on the page for at least 30 seconds, highlight and comment! These aren't people necessarily begging, just wanting full engagement, so the algorithm "knows" they've been there. It doesnt mean they necessarily want all the comments, they just want the read to be recognised. So I think the algorithm fuels asking for comments or suggesting it.
