I think you've approached it right, by not reacting and realising hate isn't the answer. It's natural to feel very upset and want to hate them, but it only hinders your growth as a human. There are mean people everywhere, and learning to cope with them, and be who you really are, is better. Once you're happy in your own identity, no one has the power to upset and disturb you. You were right not to risk confrontation, and that's a good thing. The hate is on their side, so why give into them by hating them back.
