I understand what you mean. There is a big difference in genuine engagement and skimming (sometimes not even reading!). Writers should strive to grow and not only improve their writing but attract genuine engagement. I think a lot of the pressure comes from the admins in those groups. I've seen messages that imply they monitor who "returns" reads etc, so I think they impose this kind of external validation too, which doesn't help. It's up to writers to control and own their experience of reading and engagement in a genuine way, and ignore this kind of pressure. It's rubbish. I've even seen groups advertising saying, you MUST clap back! 😂
