Interesting story and thoughts about V day. I don't think single people are all depressed by "coupledom". I have been single many years and love my independence yet at times wonder about meeting someone special. But I have had heartache and difficult relationships in the past and no longer very young. I do most things myself and dont like the idea that I "need a man" to do things. However, one also needs to be careful with thinking like that, as it may not be entirely true. We are conditioned socially to believe men are stronger, we need them etc, so even though we may have a different experience and don't need men as much as this conditioning tells us, the notion of needing a man may still prevail. In a sense we could end up lying to ourselves unless our reality aligns with our ideas of who we are.
