Jeff you have amazing insights and talent to express so eloquently what so many just touch on. This is a truly wonderful article. I have recently wondered about my liking for lamps and subtle lights, quiet, solitude etc and you've expressed so much of what underlies this and the very real thoughts and feelings that often go totally unnoticed and difficult to express. As a child I feared the dark and now I always have some lights even decorative one's like Xmas etc on. I love lights and makes me feel safe and calm. It's the sense of serenity it creates and peace.
