It is not just love which has that kind of hold over people, it can also be manipulative and controlling relationships that make it harder to get over, especially if there is a trauma bond. But the same principles as you outlined apply. Focus on yourself, your goals, etc. You will be much happier regardless of whatever the situation is. Habits etc can be difficult to undo but it can be done. Self concept is good way to do this.
