Thanks Olive. I think things have changed and progressed a lot since then, but there is still undercurrents of past historical abuses that prevail. It's more that it's part of our past history and culture, and to some extent there are still reminders of this even now.
It was a 'big thing' that women were cast aside and locked (incarcerated) in institutions. That went on for decades and there were collusion and cover ups, etc. Even records were destroyed. The commission that was set up to investigate the abuses a few years ago, uncovered many records but others were destroyed.
I am not saying that the mentalit is still the same as back then, but the mentality of victims and their children is shaped by their past. Changing the mentality involves acknowledging and confronting it. That's why I never accept someone undermining the abuse and hardship of these women, as doing so also results in the mentality of being second class, not believed, inferior, and much more. Women weren't to blame for these abusive treatment, neither were their children.
Thanks so much for reading. I appreciate it!
