This is a lovely authentic story Sarah, one of the rare one's I come across. I think many are afraid they won't get reads and don't think like you. Maybe they panic and go to join "read for read" groups based on expectation and exchange, as in that way they are guaranteed to get at least some reads. But on a deeper level I don't feel it's the right approach, as self confidence isn't really being built authentically by taking chances, experimenting and trying to engage differently. While read for read groups can be supportive, feeling obligated to read everyone story who reads yours is energy draining and tiresome. I also feel it is not the best way to engage or build up authentic readership. Your views are refreshing and a novel way to experience writing. Sometimes after I publish I feel panic stricken that nobody will read, and I have found it difficult to overcome this. Your story is very inspiring, thanks for sharing.
