Wonderful story and indeed a special time to remember. I am sure the ambulance service was a lifesaver for many, especially with no insurance or money to pay. Private healthcare is so expensive. Here free health care is means tested and until recently children under 5 or 7 yrs old (not sure what age) weren't entitled to free GP care, so it was a big strain for poor parents. It has changed since and few other changes but I dislike the health care inequality. It is still means tested and people over certain income thresholds (which are low and haven't changed in many years) could loose full entitlement to healthcare, so God forbid if they have a hospital stay, and can't pay themselves. There are some provisions for those who haven't been working who may keep their free medical card for up to 3 years. So providing a worthy service to poor people was a wonderful thing to do which you should be very proud of. Of course, the people helping weren't paid and had families to support but they still voluntarily did a wonderful thing to do it for the time they could afford to do it.
