Yes the lack of interest in user's experience isn't good. In most other situations, surveys form an important part of the user experience. Instead Medium seem to be guessing! Having studied software development and doing projects for courses, UX design was very important and where features are placed. There has to be some logic to it. Those features don't look or feel right.
